Web surfing is no longer a solo affair. Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks have quickly become an integral part of the online culture, and with them comes a whole new array of potential security threats. In this article, I’ll identify some of the key dangers of social networking and offer a few easy steps that you can take to stay safe online.

Social networking is built on the idea of sharing information openly and fostering a sense of community. Unfortunately, an online network of individuals actively sharing their experiences and seeking connections with other like-minded people can be easy prey for hackers bent on social-engineering and phishing attacks. It’s important to be aware of the threats, and to maintain a healthy skepticism in your online interactions.

Be Careful What You Share
For starters, even in an open community of sharing, you should observe some boundaries. As President Obama warned students in his address to schools earlier this month, “be careful what you post on Facebook. Whatever you do, it will be pulled up again later somewhere in your life.”

The core truth of that statement can be applied to any social networking site, and possibly even to the Internet as a whole. As a general rule, refrain from posting things online that you will regret later. Odds are good that someone, someday, will stumble across it, and it may come back to haunt you–especially if you are planning to run for public office.

Sending a message like this is sure to end up in disaster for someone–probably you.

 

Spyware Sneaks Past Facebook Safeguard

Since the past 1 week, I have not been able to access my Facebook account where after logging in, it takes forever to load into the homepage. This problem has been reported by many collegues too, and the peculair thing is that another person using the same PC and browser will be able to open his Facebook account. So, in my search for solutions, bumped into this article from PC World. What comes into my mind after reading is that Facebook might not be that safe in terms of security, so will it be better if we not reveal too much, or post too many personal pictures/videos/details etc because its easy to make a custom application which the hackers tends to target to spread their malwares?

Hackers have found a way to create automated Facebook pages and are using them to spread spyware to unsuspecting users, says antivirus and Internet security firm AVG Technologies.

In a blog entry posted last week, Research Chief Roger Thompson said that AVG’s LinkScanner users had started detecting some “rogue spyware attacks” that were coming from Facebook pages. When AVG started looking at the pages, it noticed that the Facebook profiles featured pictures of the same woman and merely had different names to differentiate them. Each page had a link to a supposed video that would infect user computers with spyware if clicked.

Thompson says that there are likely untold numbers of such rogue Facebook profiles on the Web right now, meaning that the hackers have somehow found a way to bypass Facebook’s CAPTCHA system that requires users to retype a series of letters to activate an account. Thompson said that while Facebook will certainly delete any rogue accounts it finds, the accounts “can’t be an easy thing for them to find” and will thus be difficult to eliminate.

Windows 7 battery life worse than XP

I have been using Windows 7 RC since the past 3 months or so and did not face much issues with it. But, recently I bumped into this article from www.fiercecio.com that talks about how Windows 7 eats up laptop battery much faster than the previous OS. This has been ‘news’ to me since I have become a great fan of Windows 7 not only for the fact that it I can use it (or rather try it out) free till June 2010, but also because I have a hard time juggling various Vista’ versions. Anyway, read on and lets share what you think or experience about this (battered…!!) battery thing.

 

Firefox Tips and Tricks

1) More screen space. Make your icons small. Go to View – Toolbars – Customize and check the “Use small icons” box.

2) Smart keywords. If there’s a search you use a lot (let’s say IMDB.com’s people search), this is an awesome tool that not many people use. Right-click on the search box, select “Add a Keyword for this search”, give the keyword a name and an easy-to-type and easy-to-remember shortcut name (let’s say “actor”) and save it. Now, when you want to do an actor search, go to Firefox’s address bar, type “actor” and the name of the actor and press return. Instant search! You can do this with any search box.

3) Keyboard shortcuts. This is where you become a real Jedi. It just takes a little while to learn these, but once you do, your browsing will be super fast. Here are some of the most common (and my personal favs):

Prescriptions for your PC

The other day, one of my friend from Delhi asked me (while chatting online) the download link for Bluetooth. Yes! That’s what he asked; DOWNLOAD LINK FOR BLUETOOTH. I took a great deal of time laughing before I explained to him that Bluetooth is a type of hardware and you just cannot download it because its not a software. And, recently, another one from my hostel brought a new laptop ansdfd asked me if I happen to have “Microsoft 2009.” Only after some demonstrations did we came to the realization that he was talking about MS Office 2007 and with my advice to install only the latest version of any software, he was trying to do his best by asking me if I have MS Office 2009.

I have been considering myself a novice in the field of computers and gadgets, and I am no Tech doctor or anything of that kind, but just for those of us willing to increase your technological prowness, you can take these prescriptions listed below. And to suffer from a severe cold and sorethroat in a room full of doctors doesn’t help much either. (Just kidding)

 

Experience Rules – Fun with programming

I have been known in the family to be the one who loves fiddling with electronic components or any other such electronic items that I can find. I still remember vividly the day I opened our old but sturdy military style radio just to see how the inside looks like. Curiosity getting the better of me. Oh! I wish you could see the face of my dad that evening. But I managed to save my skin that day because I opened it just to see and then put it back again, and it was working pretty fine as smooth as before. That curiosity of yearning to know how things work, I feel, has been imbibed in me long before even I realised.

The first ever full assault on taking an electronic gadget apart, what I would like to termed it as “destruction of the electromites,” was my brother’s batterred Walkman. (Yeah! I don’t get any thing new, nobody would dare to give me a new electronic gadget, thank God they did just that or else I would be taking apart my PC right now instead of writing this post. ) And you know what I did with that WAlkman (cassettee player for the novice of yesterday’s technology). I took it apart piece by piece. Oh! what a sight it was to see all those pieces lying strewn across my table in their varied shapes and sizes. Now comes the hard part. Time to reassemble. Time to put back the parts to their original place, NOW I am completely lost and clueless. And the worst part of it all, there’s always that one or two pieces of nuts/bolts left behind after completing the ordeal of putting back the parts together. They just would not find any space to fit in. There was not a single extra nuts/bolts when I opened the thing in the first place, now I am dumbfounded to fit that menacing piece of iron somewhere.
