RUPEE FONT DOWNLOAD AND USAGE

This is my own version of Rupee Symbol Tutorial for MS Office (simplified), an extended version of what has been done in Foradian.com

Here are the steps (I am using Windows 7 Ultimate OS):

1. First of all, download the Rupee Font from here

2. After download, copy the Rupee_Foradian.ttf file, go to your Control Panel, click the Appearance and Personalization menu. Click on the Font folder and paste it there and then you are done installing the Rupee font.

3. Open MS Office, scroll down to Rupee Foradian font from the Font menu. To get the rupee symbol, press the Grave Acent key “~” (the key just above the “Tab” key).

ITS BEEN A LONG TIME…

Yeah! Sure, it had been a long time since I post new articles in my blog. Some significant events had happened since I last post in the middle of January 2010. Don’t really know where to begin. I am just as confused as many others to choose IPL or EPL??? I can bear with IPL on weekdays, but at least on weekends, the TV should be switched on for EPL. What about some democracy here, mates?? (I am staying in a Hostel, and we have a common TV)

I don’t really hate IPL or cricket as such, but just can’t get myself really involved in the nuances of cricket. Maybe I was not brought up in a place where cricket is not a dominant sports among children. The recent addition of two more IPL teams with the ‘moolah’ they put into is really a waste, I would say. Why put so much money into a single sport where it is slowing killing other sports (like the national game HOCKEY) to grow in the country. Why can’t we develop multiple games simultaneously like Australia and England where they both have good football, cricket and hockey national teams and are among leaders in their respective fields.

Other than cricket and sports in general, getting back to my academic responsibilities, I had this great opportunity to intern at Tata Memorial Hospital, the best cancer hospital in India (as per “The WEEK” survey, 2009). Five weeks had gone and now busy writing a ‘thick’ report. The sufferings of patients, both young and old, the extent of pain that cancer can inflict, I mean in terms of just not the physical pain, but also emotional, psychological and financial FEAR that cancer has on people is just unimaginable. I sometimes wish I could do something to alleviate their pain, maybe even for a minute. The look on their faces, Oh my! I never could muster enough courage to look at them straight. Most of the time, I just walk straight, held my heads up and pretend not to see or hear anything.

To add to this fuel of emotional rage, I had the opportunity to enter the Operation Theatre (did a detailed study on this department) while a surgery is going on. The view from a few feet away is not that enticing but I surprised myself through my curiosity which is as strong as it ever was. May God help them all. To all those in pain and suffering, my prayers goes out to you all tonight. Till then…

Effective Media Intervention Competition on Tobacco Control

Health Communication and Education is an effective means of bringing about changes in behaviors and lifestyles that are conducive to good health. The power of various forms of media in communicating thoughts, ideas and knowledge is well known in all walks of life. Media campaigns to promote healthy lifestyle can serve as keys for motivating and bringing about behavior change in an individual, and subsequently the society.

In spite of the vast scope of the media in influencing the minds of millions, it is not used effectively to create awareness about contemporary health issues. In view of this, the School of Health System Studies at Tata Institute of Social Sciences introduces “From Ideas to EXPRESSIONS for Health” – a competition on presenting effective media interventions for health related information dissemination and education.

The competition is part of “Clairvoyance 09” and is open to participation from students of varied streams of knowledge such as Public Health, Media and Cultural Studies and all other institutions which study media and communication as part their curriculum. The competition is an attempt to generate innovative and influential media messages, which shall be utilized by funding agencies, academicians, public health service providers and media personnel.

ANTERPRERANA

This is a kind of promotional post from my side, as a student of School of Health Systems Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.

Anterprerana is a platform for the entrepreneurs to express innovative ideas for providing healthcare to the unreached and remote parts of nation. Here is a call to stand up to the challenge to organize resources in new and more valuable ways to deliver healthcare.

Theme for this year:

“Innovative Health care delivery models”

To cater effectively to the billion-plus population is a real tough task. We need effective and sustainable innovations to reach the unreached population.

Various enterprises such as telemedicine have proved to be effective venture in the healthcare delivery. Keeping in view the importance of effective health entrepreneurship models and the urgency to do so, we are inviting young entrepreneurs to come up with practical, feasible and sustainable plans/models, which can be utilized in the present system without a hitch and yet provide the necessary impetus for the achievement of equitable and egalitarian healthcare system.

THE PROBLEM WITH SHILLONG IIM!!

It was just yesterday when I read the BusinessToday’s ranking of B-Schools in India and there was a mention of Shillong IIM where the Director spoke about how some faculties prefer to leave their position after working there for a few months, most probably just to earn that “IIM” tag. Incidentally, I came across this post and would like to share it here. I am particularly eager about IIM Shillong not only because I did my Bachelor in Shillong under NEHU, but also it’s going to be the first ever IIM in the North East region from where I came from.

The just-over-an-year-old IIM Shillong is headed by a non-PhD Director who oversees an administration embroiled in random faculty appointments and irregular financial deals relating to the institute’s IT infrastructure, according to a detailed expose by Jam magazine editor Rashmi Bansal. If any of this is true, there is little reason to cheer about the seven new IIMs on the anvil.

Excerpts from the story below. On faculty appointments:

“No less than 7 of the 13 full time faculty members who joined IIM Shillong in 2008 left in less than a year, leaving a demoralised student body and questions about how an institute by the name of ‘IIM’ can get by without following any prescribed norms.”

“”A prospective faculty member is generally required to present a paper before the students and existing faculty, before being invited for interview. In the case of at least one faculty member, there was neither a presentation nor an interview.”

Another shocking case was that of a candidate who was rejected by the interview board and yet appointed as a ‘faculty associate’. Three months this person was promoted to the post of assistant professor.

Another professor was recruited to teach a subject, despite having no experience or background in this subject. These and many more decisions related to academics were taken by the director unilaterally, without consulting the Dean and other faculty colleagues.”

The story further suggests financial irregularities in setting up of the institute’s IT infrastructure.

“Mr Dutta happens to be the chairman of a company from Kolkata, the All India Technologies, which is appointed as the webmaster of IIM Shillong for designing and maintenance of the institute’s website.

Another related party transaction is the procurement of a web conferencing solution from Intellisys ltd, a company in which Mr Dutta occupies the position of a director.”

Full story here.

Update: Financial daily Business Standard, Nov 10 in its story “IIM-Shillong loses half its faculty over differences with director” quotes an anonymous member of the board of governors of IIM Shillong:

“A board member admitted: “One of the faculty members had circulated an email among the board and faculty members, protesting against the termination letter handed over to him without giving him a reason. However, nothing has been done in this matter, though it was brought to the notice of the secretary of the ministry of human resource development.””

Director Ashoke Dutta is quoted in his defence as saying:

The institute’s director and other board members, however, have a different view of the events. Asked about these allegations, Dutta said, “This is all false. Shillong is a tough place to be in and I have been successful in getting the campus up and running in just two months. We have a faculty sanction strength of 10, while we have had 13 faculty members on campus. I am aware of the mail being circulated by some disgruntled professors. While one has been sacked, the others left for greener pastures.”

Desiccating SOULS – II

Lately it has become frosty, the sun hasn’t even came out.
I got sick of wondering what the whole thing was about.
I just wish all those two-faced people would stop lying!
Because inside, my heart is bleeding, my feelings slowly dying.
Talk, talk and just nothing more than beginnings, middles and ends.
Principles and conclusions which changes like the winds.

The want for love and future plans,
Shows just how great are life’s demands.
How bad can the scene really be inside?
And how many eyes have cried and cried.
With everything that’s in their mind,
So far yet so near, with no end to find.
Part of the cause is memories,
And for them there are no remedies.

What will come of the morn and the days?
Who will stand with the purpose and ways?
What shall be known of the days we’ve wasted?
What will you do with the time you’ve wasted?

You didn’t help them when they fell,
Because you don’t see this part as well.
What of a gentle touch or embrace.
Just never miss that precious chance.
It’s horrid to feel nothing, no emotion, no feeling.
Maybe we have to sleep in a coffin to help us start dreaming.
When griping pain, despair, and gnawing grief overtake,
And the front you have been portraying is just a fake.
You need to make sense of what’s in your mind.
So that an end to this mess we maybe can find.

Death is something that we all dread,
We lie thinking about it alone in our bed.
The urgency builds up and its too much to cope;
All I can do is sit, pray, and hope.
For this endless circle of life is full of illusions,
And men shall come to their conclusions.
Our time is frail, fleeting, and brief,
No matter what our will or belief.

Nobody cares if they make it through the night,
How long can they stand up and fight?
Just the thought of it brings me to tears,
Yet often have I, thought people cares.
Now I’m used to the darkness, but I don’t like it one bit.
For I don’t know when the light will be lit.
Hold on to the tightrope, don’t fade into night
God will always be there, there’ll always be light.

My Wishes for Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, the music faint and far.
I gazed through my thoughts at the twinkling, wishing star.
In the fading light, I confide my wishes to the velvet sky,
Praying fervently to make my wishes come true in a big way.0

I wish that people desires more friendship and togetherness,
As everyone have the rights to a decent life and happiness.
I wish that there is peace on earth instead of war,
I wish they would use that money to feed the poor.
I wish that there is honesty instead of crime;
More of giving and sharing time after time.
I wish justice would be restored,
And peace reign in our souls.

I wish famine be banished from the Earth,
And each day give hope for a new rebirth.
I wish may our generosity and love end their plight,
For those living with hunger, with no food in sight,
I wish crops would grow strong with the gentle rain,
And children of the dust would wander, whole again,
I wish for a flicker of light to be always there to behold,
Giving warmth and strength to escape from the cold.

I wish those wracked with pain in their life,
May soon experience relief from their strife.
I wish somehow, somewhere they’ll find a place;
In the fading light, a smiling soul to embrace.
I wish we would perpetually pray for blessed rain,
To fall upon us, a barren waste of sun-dried plain.

I wish life will be bedecked with fire-sprinkling twists of gold,
And we will be filled with wonderment, as the days unfold.
I wish our warmth would touch other’s heart,
And love would filter in, barriers falling apart.
I wish that we would stop causing each other pain,
Because in God’s eyes, we are all one and the same.
I wish all of us would looked forward to each day,
As much as these dreams may seem far away,

I wish may on this Christmas day,
We all would take the time to pray;
For souls that are sick and lame.
Reach out with loving hands to share.
I wish long after Christmas is gone,
The spirit would continue to make us whole.
I wish let not my fallibility draw me away,
Let me reach out to others, day after day,

NOTE: No one’s heart is disabled for what it can hold deep inside. Love and faith which we each should hold within that heart are what makes us able to go beyond whatever disability we have. For those things that are most important, can never be taken away but only increased.

When all HOPE is gone!

When you feel life has no meaning,
When your troubles are unrelenting.
Stop complaining.

When your health is failing,
When the sparks are fading.
Stop complaining.

When someone cheated on you,
When your loved one deserts you.
Stop complaining.

When the future seems bleak,
And difficulties are at their peak.
Stop complaining

When you feel the war is lost,
With the battle of life in frost.
Stop complaining.

When your prayers are void of answers,
And questions of doubt become denser.
Stop complaining.

When you cannot face the heat,
And moments become incomplete.
Stop complaining.

When happiness seems to elude you,
And friends are just fake armour.
Stop complaining.

When you don’t find enough reasons to be thankful for,
And you feel the ever presence of death at the door,
Stop complaining.

Stop complaining because GOD just starts to work when all hope is gone.
